Diary Notes Please remember to let us have details of sightings for the wildlife diary. Our diarist is currently reliant on wildlife coming to her - such as the magpie that flew in through her conservatory and into the bathroom and needed to be persuaded to leave! Wildlife in the Garden Right now Blackbirds and Hedgehogs are feasting on the fallen apples in the garden, a wonderful sight. I'm not too happy about the Starlings sitting in the tree pecking holes in good ones though. Although there is an abundance of food at the moment it is good time to get ready for autumn. Bird feeders should be cleaned now as part of a regular schedule and also moved to a different area to prevent diseases accumulating on the ground. After tidying up the garden please leave a pile of branches in a corner. Woodlice, earwigs, centipedes, moths and beetles will love it. The Christmas catalogs are starting to arrive - how about treating yourself to a hedgehog box, a bee nest box or a ladybird box. Install them now and encourage wildlife to over winter with you and be ready to help in your garden next year. As we move into Autumn don't clean up your gardens too much. Leave lavender and lemon balsam seed heads and in January watch the goldfinch feed and smell the perfume released from the plants by the feeding frenzy. Leave out damaged fruit for blackbirds to feast on. Leaves left on the ground will be tossed around by birds looking for grubs before being dragged under by worms to enrich your soil. Consider planting bushes such as pyracantha, cotoneaster and hawthorn, which provide colourful food for birds as well as shelter. |
