At the July 2000 meeting it was agreed to set up a sub-committee to coordinate our efforts to formulate a management plan for our entire area. Members have been asked to adopt a particular area and to document the flora and fauna within that area. Reports will be submitted every three months, building a picture of the Killinghall Moor environment over the year. Our conservation group started at a time of growing interest and concern as to the richness and variety of wildlife on earth. Round the world the loss of species has been notable and in the UK in the last 100 years over 100 species have been lost. The Biodiversity Action Plan is the UK government’s initiative to maintain and enhance biodiversity. Biodiversity is seen as a quality of life issue. At County Council level the Bio-diversity Officer, Graham Megson, has been tasked with gathering together representatives from the many and varied groups interested in nature and compiling information on the habitats in the area. KMCG has submitted some information on the habitats and wildlife in our area and a list of our top ten important species. These included the skylark, linnet, reed bunting, cowberries, water vole and native crayfish. This information was available because Joan Owen keeps a nature diary for us. Please remember to let us know what you see. If we don’t record details we can’t report them and so substantiate any claims as to the importance of not allowing further development on the Moor. * |
